Judge Postpones Trial For Three Former Minneapolis Police Officers Charged In George Floyd’s Death

On the 13th of May,2021, A judge has ruled that the trial for the three former Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting in the death of George Floyd will be postponed. According to AP News, the trial for former officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane will start in March 2022. The report states that Judge Peter Cahill changed the date so the federal case can proceed first and allow publicity over Derek Chauvin’s verdict to die down.

We recently reported Derek Chauvin has already been convicted of murder and manslaughter. At the time of the announcement, it seems like folks were able to finally let out a sigh of relief before they started cuttin’ up. Social media was lit, as people reacted to the news. Derek quickly began to trend on Twitter and became a meme, due to his facial expression once the reading of the verdict was announced. He looked very shocked and in disbelief as he was being handcuffed.

There hasn’t been a date set for the federal case, but Judge Cahill said it carries a potentially higher penalty. Reports also state that former federal prosecutor Mark Osler, who is now a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, said the former officers could be discussing the possibility of talking about a plea deal because their attorneys supported the delay even though the prosecution did not. Mark said, “One can infer that the defense attorneys are hoping that the federal case will offer lower penalties for their clients and a dismissal of the state charges.”

In addition, all four former officers face federal charges that allege they violated George’s civil rights when they arrested him. Former officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng were charged due to failure to intervene in Chauvin’s use of unreasonable force and failing to give George Floyd medical aid.

We will continue to keep y’all posted on the upcoming trials.
